How big is AI search right now

AI assistants have gone from niche tools to mainstream discovery channels in about two years. Here is the scale, as reported directly by the platforms and by independent traffic analytics firms.

900M

ChatGPT weekly active users

Announced by OpenAI on Feb 27, 2026, up from 800M in Oct 2025 and 400M a year earlier.

Ranking #1 on Google does not mean AI will cite you

This is the finding that surprises most marketers. Semrush analyzed 200,000 keywords in a dedicated AI Overview study and found that traditional Google rankings and AI citations do not line up as closely as expected.

46% / 34%

of the time the #1 Google result is cited inside the AI Overview

Desktop / mobile. Meaning ranking first organically is far from a guarantee of AI Overview inclusion.

35% / 32%

of question-style queries (who, what, how, why) trigger an AI Overview

Desktop / mobile, based on a 200,000-keyword sample.

+71%

growth in AI Overview appearance on commercial-intent queries

Over six months (Nov 2025–Apr 2026), across a 600,000+ keyword sample. Finance queries grew fastest at +231%.

Which AI engines are actually sending traffic

ChatGPT still leads AI web traffic, but its share has been shrinking fast as Gemini and Claude scale. Tracking a single engine is no longer enough.

PlatformJune 2025May 2026Metric
ChatGPT~76%~53%share of worldwide generative AI web traffic
Gemini<9%~27–28%share of worldwide generative AI web traffic
Claude~2%~9%share of worldwide generative AI web traffic

In the same period, US brand citation presence inside ChatGPT answers rose from 1.6% to 6.8%, roughly a fourfold increase in how often any given brand gets mentioned by name.

What actually improves your AI citation rate

The most cited academic reference on this topic is the Princeton GEO study, published at KDD 2024. Researchers tested nine content strategies across a 10,000-query benchmark to see which ones actually moved the needle on AI visibility.

up to +40%

Visibility increase in generative engine responses from the top-performing tactics: citing sources, adding statistics, and including quotations. Each of the three top tactics produced gains in the 30 to 40 percent range.

What this means in practice

Three takeaways from the data above. First, AI search is no longer a rounding error: nearly a billion people use ChatGPT weekly, and total AI platform traffic grew 70% in a year. Second, SEO and GEO are related but not the same game. Ranking #1 on Google does not guarantee an AI citation. Third, the fix is not a mystery: content with clear statistics, cited sources, and direct quotations is measurably more likely to get cited.

This is also why this page cites every number with a name, a date, and a link. It is the same principle the Princeton study measured, applied to itself.

Common questions

How many people use ChatGPT in 2026?

OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users on February 27, 2026, up from 800 million in October 2025 and 400 million a year earlier.

Does ranking #1 on Google guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews?

No. Semrush found that the #1 organic result was only cited inside the AI Overview 46% of the time on desktop and 34% of the time on mobile. AI Overviews frequently cite different sources than the top organic ranking.

What actually improves your chances of being cited by AI?

The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) tested nine content strategies and found that adding statistics, quotations, and cited sources produced the largest gains, each improving citation visibility by roughly 30 to 40 percent.
