How to Choose Which AI Engine to Run

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity: each reaches a different audience and works differently. Here is what to know before you pick.

They are not the same

Running the same prompt on ChatGPT and Perplexity can give completely different results. One engine might mention your brand prominently. The other might ignore it entirely. Each AI has its own training data, sources it trusts, and way of presenting answers, which means your visibility varies engine by engine.

The main engines

ChatGPTLargest audience

Start here if you are only running one engine.

ChatGPT is used by more people than any other AI assistant. When it mentions your brand, it reaches the widest possible audience. Its answers are usually plain text without links, so visibility here builds brand awareness more than direct website traffic.

Good for

  • ·Maximum reach
  • ·Strongest brand awareness
  • ·Used across all industries

Keep in mind

  • ·Lower direct click-through to your site
PerplexityBest for traffic

Add this second, especially for B2B or research-heavy queries.

Perplexity always shows numbered source links with every answer. Its users are actively researching, which means they are more likely to click through to your site. A brand mention on Perplexity often translates directly into website visits.

Good for

  • ·Highest click-through rate per mention
  • ·Engaged, research-minded users
  • ·Always shows source links

Keep in mind

  • ·Smaller total user base than ChatGPT
GeminiGoogle ecosystem

Add this if you care about Google Search visibility.

Gemini is Google's AI assistant, embedded directly into Google Search. As Google rolls it out to more searches, visibility here increasingly overlaps with traditional SEO. If your customers use Google, Gemini is becoming harder to ignore.

Good for

  • ·Deeply integrated with Google Search
  • ·Growing fast
  • ·Tends to include source links

Keep in mind

  • ·Behavior still evolving as Google updates it
ClaudeSelective sourcing

Add this for technical, developer, or B2B-focused audiences.

Claude tends to favor clear, factual, well-structured content over promotional copy, and is popular with developers and technical decision-makers. It shows inline citations similar to Perplexity but is more selective about which sources it surfaces.

Good for

  • ·Strong with technical and developer audiences
  • ·Rewards clear, factual writing
  • ·Shows source citations

Keep in mind

  • ·Smaller consumer user base than ChatGPT
Google AI OverviewsSearch page placement

Relevant if your business relies on Google Search traffic.

AI Overviews appear at the very top of Google Search results, above everything else. Being cited inside one puts your brand in an extremely prominent position. For queries where an AI Overview appears, this placement can be more valuable than ranking first organically.

Good for

  • ·Top-of-page placement in Google Search
  • ·High visibility for commercial queries

Keep in mind

  • ·Not all queries trigger an AI Overview
  • ·Reduces clicks to sites not cited

Where to start

If you are just getting started, run ChatGPT first. It gives you the broadest picture of how AI describes your brand. Once you have that baseline, add Perplexity to understand which of your prompts could drive real website traffic.

Over time, running across all engines tells you where your visibility is strong, where it is missing, and which engine is worth optimizing for first.
